The Bigger Picture - A Brilliant Synthesis by Professor Alfred McCoy
Below is an email (slightly edited here) I recently sent to family & a few friends.
........................
Here's the highly likely Bigger Picture of what's going on with Putin, Ukraine, China, & the USA. Listen carefully to the whole clip. Pay particular attention to the discussion of China's MASSIVE Eurasian infrastructure project (the largest in the history of humans), the Belt and Road Initiative, or BRI. If it's successful (& we should know by the end of this decade), it likely will mean the end of USA's global hegemony.
One might say, so what? That end will mean the end of the Dollar as the world's reserve currency, & that will mean the end of our economy's pursuit of unlimited growth & overconsumption. Ecologically speaking, that's a good thing. But economically speaking, the Powers-That-Be here are not prepared to handle such a paradigm shift. Our economy will collapse unless policy makers start thinking on a smaller scale.
Bottom line: the USA's global influence has been declining for about 50 years, & now our Bully Boy tactics (threats, the backing of coups, invasions, drone wars, sanctions, kidnappings, assassinations, military bases all around the world, etc.) are coming home to roost. Main Street USA is in for some massive changes in our Rat Race lifestyle. Once we get over the initial shock, in many respects that won't be a bad thing.
Wrap your head around it. The probability is high that it's coming.
History matters.

Geographers Weigh In On Putin's War, Plus His Orwellian Doublespeak
https://www.aag.org/war-peace-and-the-possibilities-of-a-shared-future/
It's an excellent commentary.
Putin never should have invaded, but supposedly felt threatened by the prospect of one more NATO country on Russia's border. Then, too, it seems as though he's trying to rebuild the old Russian empire by taking back former states. Finally, it's possible this fiasco is partially about resources. Ukraine has a rich grain belt in much of its territory. Russia has something similar, but I guess more fertile farmland never hurts...unless it's obtained illegally & immorally.
In any case, Russia's conduct of the war seems to be egregious beyond the pale. Attacking noncombatants and nonmilitary structures during engagement in war never should be excused. Whether he realizes it or not, Putin has lost tons of credibility. That's also true because of his Orwellian language. According to him, it's not an invasion or war, it's a "special military operation". Apparently he believes people are stupid.
It must also be said that Putin isn't alone in the use of such lingo. Many USA Leaders have called war and invasion by less harsh-sounding terms. That started with the Vietnam War, which originally was referred to as the Vietnam "Conflict". Congress didn't declare war, which is required by our Constitution, so that mess couldn't be called what it was. Later and up through today, supposedly "War Powers Resolutions" legally bypass the Constitutional requirement for a declaration of war by Congress. I hope most people know that's nonsense.
On his drone wars, Obama once commented, "It's not really a war...". When you cross borders with war machines and kill people, that's a war, Mr. President. To say it's not is ridiculous. Bill Clinton referred to our invasion of Bosnia as a "peace-keeping" operation. Perhaps it's arguable, but I believe our troops were sent to a war there. The point is: Putin isn't the only one to engage in doublespeak.

How Energy and Finance Have Enabled Plutocrats and Ruined Western Democracies
https://www.newstatesman.com/ideas/2022/02/the-age-of-plutocracy?emci=61695df0-c598-ec11-a507-281878b83d8a&emdi=8832a6a1-c898-ec11-a507-281878b83d8a&ceid=6171896
If the link doesn't work (after copying & pasting), do a Search for the first line only up through "...plutocracy?".
It all started about fifty years ago in the early 1970's. Up through today, it only has gotten worse--- more plutocrats and less truly participatory democracy. A paradigm shift is needed.
The article is an extract from a book, and it's highly informative.

Long Covid, and A Great Essay on Carbon & Humans
Now is NOT the time to lift SARS (aka, Covid) restrictions. Even mild cases can result in other problems later, such as significant heart problems. Those who want their "Freedom" basically are asking for the freedom to spread disease. That's something which historically has not been granted, & shouldn't be. Total deaths go up every day; only the rate of increase in deaths is dropping. The same is true for the number of infections. Neither TOTAL number has ever gone down since this whole thing started. Only the rates of increase have dropped from time to time. The pandemic is not over.

The U.S. Department of Sustainability
In the article at the link in my last post, the author cites a few governments which are exceptions to the contention that politics and politicians essentially are incapable of effectively dealing with our worldwide Crisis. The exceptions are: "New Zealand, Bhutan, most of the Scandinavian countries, [and] Germany perhaps...". In my opinion, here are a few more (in no particular order): Netherlands, Austria, Costa Rica, Portugal, and Uruguay. There are several others, as well. The USA is not one of them.
Despite the praiseworthy efforts of the exceptions above, the world as a whole is not yet where it needs to be relative to significantly dealing with the socio-eco-econ-ethical Crisis. There are about 200 countries in the world today. [That's not counting a few dozen which are not recognized by the U.N., but have declared themselves independent.] The Crisis we are in is global, and surmounting it will require a global effort. Furthermore, the "Market" will not solve the problem. It will take Main Street, NGOs, all manner of other groups, the U.N., Business (of a flavor different from much of what we have today), and yes, Governments as well.
We all know that. Or rather, all of us do except for most economists, most politicians, and a few others. The problem here is 1) lack of knowledge in high places, and 2) the focus is on the wrong aspect of our existence, as follows.
1) As pointed out in the essay by Julian Cribb, Leaders around the world (with a few notable exceptions) essentially are clueless when it comes to Ecology and Environmental Science. They seem to think going Green means only solar panels, electric vehicles, and recycling. A few probably add reuse and using less. They appear to know little-to-nothing about the importance of biodiversity in Nature, the extent of toxicity in our environment, the nuclear waste problem, the nuke weapons problem, desertification, soil degradation, the extent of both income and wealth inequality and their impact, the problem of inequity, and on & on.
To compound the problem, the advisors of many Leaders are mostly lawyers or mainstream economists. All they seem to know is the status quo. On top of that, there's no (in the USA, at least) comprehensive, centralized Gov't agency with the purpose of implementing sustainability. I don't even know which current agencies are working on it, probably in isolation. None of the above bodes well for sustainability.
2) It seems 99.9% of the time when government begins working on some aspect of the socio-eco-econ-ethical Crisis we're facing, too much emphasis is on the economy only. Everything else is shoved to the back of the bus, or thrown under it.
...............
For those who still believe government plus technology is going to solve the Crisis, I suggest this: "lobby" hard for a national Department of Sustainability. Sustainability has three major components: environmental, economic, and social. In such a department, all three components must be equally represented. It's a transdisciplinary field, and comprehensive thinking is paramount. This proposed department should be staffed with botanists, wildlife biologists, ecologists, agriculturalists, anthropologists, ecological economists, industrial ecologists, and perhaps an environmental geographer, a climatologist, and an ethics philosopher. [I imagine I left out an important field or two.] With all that, government might come up with significant solutions.
How will the new department be financed? There are numerous possibilities, none of which involve increasing taxes on wage earners. For example, tax the billionaires 0.1% on their incomes. They should be anxious to help finance the discovery of solutions. Why? Because civil society is at stake. Or, cut the Defense budget by 1% (or some such number). Or, cut the budgets of every current Department by some appropriate fraction of 1%. Or, believe it or not, there are many millionaires who are divesting themselves of a large portion of their wealth. Solicit their donations. Or, root out the financial waste in all departments and use that. Or, mix & match from the above. Or, just "print" the money. The Fed Reserve has been doing something similar to that for a few decades. It's not good for the value of the dollar, but then, neither is the collapse of organized human existence. Hello.

"The End of Politics"
https://mahb.stanford.edu/blog/the-end-of-politics/
The short essay at the link above contains the most important concept you'll ever read relative to the socio-eco-econ-ethical Crisis upon us. Understanding that concept is critical to preserving organized human existence on Earth.
Politics will not save us. In fact, it is doing the exact opposite. It (along with corporatism) has put us on the beginning of the path to human extinction... and that's not hyperbole.

About Recycling PLASTIC
Consider the following.
1. Of all the modern-day plastic ever produced, it's estimated that only about 9% has been recycled.
2. Microplastic and nanoplastic particles in significant amounts are floating around in our atmosphere. Eventually they settle onto land, the ocean, and other bodies of water. Some unknown amounts of them become incorporated into the bodies of living plants, animals (including us), and microbes. For the most part, effects are not yet known. We do know that "plasticizer" additives (during the manufacture of plastic) are toxic to a wide range of life forms.
https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2021/04/atmospheric-travel-scientists-find-microplastic-everywhere
3. In the interest of recycling plastic, industry is now making clothes out of plastic fibers. One unintended consequence is that laundry tumble dryers have been found to be emitting problematic amounts of microplastics into our atmosphere.
https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0239165#sec014
The photo below is of two ball-type caps I purchased recently. They are advertised as having been made from recycled plastic. I bought them because I couldn't find any others that did not look as though an elephant sat on them.
.......................
It should be obvious that we humans are not doing nearly enough to address the monumental problem of plastic pollution. Most of the plastic I've seen in my relatively long life is utterly unnecessary. It doesn't last long as a consumer good, and winds up in an ever-growing mountain of mostly nonbiodegradable trash. Or perhaps worse, it's physically broken down into micro and nano size particles. Studies are lacking as to the effects of such.
As a species, it's long past the time when we need to consider a paradigm shift in lifestyle. Rooted in materialism/consumerism, the dominant one now is not serving us well. A major change is needed. We've made somewhat of a start, but we have a long way to go if we're to have a sustainable future. That won't happen if we rely solely on Technology. The problem isn't only physical; it's metaphysical as well. Tech alone will not solve the plethora of problems we're mired in now.
