Public Awareness of ‘Nuclear Winter’ is Too Low Given Current Risks

This (see the title above) is particularly true in the UK and the USA; however, I'm guessing it's also true in other places around the world.  Decades ago, I'm fairly certain most people were up to speed on the highly probable effects of nuclear war and the aftermath of nuclear winter on the biosphere.

Nowadays, we have several world leaders who have developed, or are developing, so-called tactical (rather than strategic) nuke weapons.  Apparently, they think use of them will have no serious or long-term deleterious effects on the life which survives such a war.  According to the scientific fields of ecology, biology, climatology, and physics, such thinking is sheer nonsense.


Leaders such as Obama, Trump, and Biden (all of whom are responsible for our tactical nuke weapon arsenal) have displayed a mind-boggling ignorance of nuclear winter.  How tragic, and that's just in the USA.  I imagine leaders in other nuke weapon countries are just as bad.

In democratic countries, voters need to wake up and kick such politicians out of office.  Nuclear weapons are not necessary to defend a nation, not any nation.

If green plants and oceanic algae - which are the base of food chains AND supply us with oxygen - can't get adequate sunlight for months (perhaps up to a year or two), then such will be an extinction level event for many animals, possibly including humans.  In any case, famine would be widespread.  If animals are subjected to an atmosphere overburdened with soot and other fine particulates from explosion updraft, populations will crash.  Any animal with lungs would be severely impacted.  Then, on top of everything above, there's the damage from radioactive fallout.  Never mind the impact on fresh water supplies.  Ionizing radiation is the ultimate pollution.

BOTTOM LINE:  maintaining nuke weapons not only is the height of ignorance, it's an egregious insult to civil society and a stupidly dangerous risk to all life.

Mother Nature has been sending the world a message re getting back to "normal"

 Unfortunately, it appears too many of us aren't understanding it.
Here's the message---

"Your 'normal' is gone, and it won't be back for decades, or perhaps ever.  Why?  Because too many Powers-That-Be and Main Street people have ignored ecological principles for much too long.  They have failed to understand the importance of natural ecosystems, and the fact that natural Laws apply to humans.  Plus, too many continue to believe the ongoing pursuit of ever-increasing, perpetual economic and population growth will not further damage the biophysical basis of your existence.

"Too many seem to think the current extreme weather events on Earth are merely flukes, and soon will fade back to 'normal'.  Sorry, that's a false belief.  Unless you take significant action immediately, things only will get worse.  Such is not only in regard to weather, but also in regard to disease, soil, fresh water availability, the food supply, and clean air.  Wake up; you're in a crisis of unprecedented proportions.  Support those who are working hard to solve it; shun/boycott those who are not.

To make matters worse, you're still going to war with each other during the Eco-Crisis of the Ages.  I guess you figure:  the air is already so overloaded with greenhouse gases, more of that won't matter much at all.  Plus, apparently you believe that war won't affect the global cooperation necessary to address your ongoing, existential, and ecological threat.  That's the height of ignorance."

As a concerned human, I'll add the following---

For a few decades, I've been amazed at how voters continue to elect to crucial offices mostly those candidates (regardless of political Party) who essentially are illiterate when it comes to ecology and the decades-long Eco-Crisis.  I imagine there are many reasons for such a scenario, but surely the last three years or so have given the vast majority of people pause to reconsider.

Democrats and Republicans have had their shot, and they've failed.  The crisis we're in is, in large part, due to their policies.  Mega Biz also is largely responsible.  So are voters and consumers of junk.  Eco-overshoot reigns supreme.  If my grandkids are to have a decent future, everything must change.

Better Than Nothing, But Falls Way Short of What's Needed NOW

The IRA is a paltry start on a few (certainly not all) major problems.  For example, while boosting development of renewable energy, it also greatly favors fossil fuels.  Now there's an oxymoron, eh?  As to taxing the Rich Polluters, forget it.  Health care - paltry, paltry, paltry.

On a related note---
Just as bad, there are no significant, proposed legislative bills which address toxic pollution, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, and more.  They all are just as much an existential threat as is climate disruption.

On a separate note---
Yes, despite what the elites are saying, we are in a recession.  The last Jobs Report is being touted as proof to the contrary, but is anyone asking the following?  How many of those jobs are part-time?  How many are temporary?  How many are low-paying?  How many are some combination of the preceding?  How many workers have two jobs, and still can't get ahead of inflation?  Why not? Because the jobs are relatively low-paying and have close to zero benefits.

Then, too, consider this:  according to the U.S. Debt Clock, the median income here is a tad under $36K/year.  That means half our workers make LESS than $36K.  Half.  So, how is the economy surviving?  On DEBT, massive debt - national, corporate, and personal debt.  Total U.S. debt is now over $92 trillion.  Our GDP is under $25 trillion, and decreasing every second.  [See usdebtclock.org ]  All Bubbles (including Debt Bubbles) burst sooner or later.  The whole situation is unsustainable.

About Recycling PLASTIC

 Consider the following.

1.  Of all the modern-day plastic ever produced, it's estimated that only about 9% has been recycled.

2.  Microplastic and nanoplastic particles in significant amounts are floating around in our atmosphere.  Eventually they settle onto land, the ocean, and other bodies of water.  Some unknown amounts of them become incorporated into the bodies of living plants, animals (including us), and microbes.  For the most part, effects are not yet known.  We do know that "plasticizer" additives (during the manufacture of plastic) are toxic to a wide range of life forms.

3.  In the interest of recycling plastic, industry is now making clothes out of plastic fibers.  One unintended consequence is that laundry tumble dryers have been found to be emitting problematic amounts of microplastics into our atmosphere.

The photo below is of two ball-type caps I purchased recently.  They are advertised as having been made from recycled plastic.  I bought them because I couldn't find any others that did not look as though an elephant sat on them.

It should be obvious that we humans are not doing nearly enough to address the monumental problem of plastic pollution.  Most of the plastic I've seen in my relatively long life is utterly unnecessary.  It doesn't last long as a consumer good, and winds up in an ever-growing mountain of mostly nonbiodegradable trash.  Or perhaps worse, it's physically broken down into micro and nano size particles.  Studies are lacking as to the effects of such.

As a species, it's long past the time when we need to consider a paradigm shift in lifestyle.  Rooted in materialism/consumerism, the dominant one now is not serving us well.  A major change is needed.  We've made somewhat of a start, but we have a long way to go if we're to have a sustainable future.  That won't happen if we rely solely on Technology.  The problem isn't only physical; it's metaphysical as well.  Tech alone will not solve the plethora of problems we're mired in now.

The Bibliography for "The Beginning of the Path to...", Plus More on the Crisis & Solutions

Tentatively, the full title of the book I'm writing is:  The Beginning of the Path to Human Extinction, and HOW TO GET OFF IT - Notes on a Paradigm Shift.  The bibliography below is incomplete because the book is not yet finished.  Hopefully, it will be by January, 2022.  Many of the following references can be found online, so those easily can be added to your socio-eco-econ-ethical Crisis "library" collection.  If you don't have such a collection, here's a grand start.

Some may think my use of the term "human extinction" is nothing but hyperbole.  The experiences (both non-work and work-related) and the education I've had in the last 79 years tell me it isn't.  We're at the beginning of that path.  It's time to get our heads out of the sand, shed the apathy or ignorance we seem to cling to, ignore the Edward Bernays style propaganda, and get to work.

Many people around the world have made laudable first steps toward transitioning to a sustainable human existence.  For the most part, I think those efforts have been on a micro scale, and that's a necessity.  Some of the efforts have been on a macro scale, and that's a good start.  But too many Powers-That-Be appear to still be tinkering around the edges of the Crisis, or kicking the can down the road.  For example, there's a lot of talk about "net-zero" (carbon emissions) by 2050.  What that amounts to is postponing actions which could be taken now, and would result in solutions within ten years.  Those solutions would not require new, unknown technology.  2050 will be too late.

It isn't only carbon that's being dumped into the atmosphere by us.  The natural Nitrogen Cycle is being overloaded with nitrogen oxides (N2Ox) by human activities - primarily factory farming, manufacturing, fossil fuel combustion, solid waste incineration, and wastewater management.  Like methane (CH4), N2Ox compounds are multiple times more potent a greenhouse gas than is CO2.  Currently, nitrogen oxide emissions from our actions amount to only about 7%  of greenhouse gas emissions, but their potency is a concern.

Drastic changes are necessary to solve these problems, so all of us need to get on board and convince our Leaders to act, not just talk.  We need to start phasing out fossil fuels NOW, rather than issuing new drilling permits.  Similarly, we need to start transforming factory farms NOW.  We need to support/encourage/subsidize family regenerative farms NOW, rather than providing welfare to fossil fuel corps.  We need to significantly reduce or eliminate the monstrous carbon footprint of cement/concrete manufacturing NOW.  We need to tax mega carbon emissions NOW, and then disburse the funds directly as a universal basic income.  We need to tax billionaires NOW.  They stood on the shoulders of society to get where they are.  Society provided them with all kinds of infrastructure, communication, education, contacts, law enforcement, a civil habitat, etc.  [Yes, they helped pay for all that...but then, so did we all.]  Those are only a few of the things that could be done now, but there's little to no action because of the undue influence of corporatism/neoliberalism.
